While Practising and Learning
We strongly encourage you to complete formative assessments without help from AI tools. Formative assessments include quizzes, past-year papers, problem sets, and programming exercises.
There is good evidence that using AI at this introductory stage can harm your learning. Any temporary gain in the 15% formative component may put your performance in the 80% summative component at risk. Mastering programming requires sustained practice and time spent working through problems independently.
AI tools can still be useful for explaining a concept in different ways. If a different explanation helps the concept click for you, we encourage you to use AI in that way to support your learning.

You are welcome to talk to us about our views on AI use. As instructors, we use AI tools often, but only in specific situations. This policy is meant to help you learn in an increasingly “AI-first” world, not to ignore AI or pretend it does not exist.
